I decided to take a look over every film that’s ever won best picture at the Academy Awards, to get a little bit of context. From 1927-2010, there were 12 films in which I could remember a Black character. 12.

Examples: A Black soldier under the…

To be fair, a lot of the parts mentioned here were movies based on REAL people. It’s not the fault of the people who made those films that the characters they were centered around were actually white. I don’t think it’s fair for you to include those kinds of parts, that wasn’t a racist choice, they were just being historically accurate. Or for the parts based off books, they were written in a time when racism or slavery were still completely acceptable, so naturally their main heroes would be white. You have to be accurate to what those people wrote, as well. I understand the point you’re trying to prove but when you include things like that it just makes me feel like I can’t take you seriously because you’re not being fair in your argument. If you’re going to prove a point, do it reasonably, or no one will want to listen to you. You’ll end up doing more harm than good.

To be fair, white people typically don’t care about anything unless it’s told from a white perspective. the point is that movies about people of color are not seen as valid or fundable unless white people are involved. The point is that only white sells. That anything that isn’t white is seen as “other” and somehow therefore unrelatable. The argument “so naturally their main heroes would be white” is laughably ridiculous. I can’t take you seriously because you’re not being fair in your argument. If you’re going to prove a point, do it reasonably or nobody will want to listen to you. You’ll end up doing more harm than good.
