I'm not trying to speak FOR anybody, and I like being called on my bullshit, especially my white privilege. Everything I'm saying likely has been said before, but I couldn't tell you where. I'm working on that. I have traditionally been observationally educated but am working hard on finding better resources to learn from because I fully recognize I need to grow. Okay a rant
One of the biggest problems I have with my fellow atheists is their need to swing their logic dicks around. This goes for a lot of people who worship at the altar of logic, just a lot of them tend to be atheists.
Anyway, I’m a big fan of logic, I’m a big fan of intellectualism, and I am most definitely an atheist. I absolutely cannot believe in god. I’ve tried. It doesn’t work for me. I just don’t view the world that way.
BUT that doesn’t mean I’m going to look down on people who don’t agree with me like they’re morons. That’s one of my biggest problems with anti-theists; they’re assholes nine times out of ten. I understand being wary of the power of religion, trust me, I studied history. But at the same time I have seen religion do wonderful things for people.
Could you argue that it was the person all along and not the religion? Sure but I see it as a tool, quite frankly, and how a person wields it is what matters. We’re not going to live in a world free of religion any time soon, and it brings serious joy to some people, so fuck off.
But in general when someone believes in something my fellow “rational minds” don’t believe in, they get seriously condescending, which makes me angry. Just because I don’t believe in something, that doesn’t mean I should be a Dick to someone who does. If they don’t fuck with me or anyone else in the name of their beliefs, I have no problem. Sometimes I don’t get something, and then I learn more, ask questions, and I understand. Because I am not flawless and all knowing.
Other times something seems silly at first, but then I see why people believe in it. I had a moment like that today. And I just feel like, wow, so glad I wasn’t an asshole to this person because they’re really great.
Because if you write off everyone who isn’t JUST LIKE YOU, what does that say about you? Seriously?
It makes me really, really mad when people apply “logic” to things like trans* issues. Oh my god sometimes seriously people think they’re so logical, but they’re really very, very stupid, and that makes it even worse because they are so self-righteous in how utterly, utterly wrong they are.
Sorry I am done rambling badly but I’ve been thinking about this a lot. Maybe I’ll rewrite it to be more coherent later.
